When there is no water

What if there is no water? Accustomed as we are to comforts, we never think of a situation in which it could come to lack of water in the house. Yet it could happen, for a pipe rupture or contamination for example, and it's best to be prepared. For any emergency, always keep a supply of drinking water at home, especially if you live in isolated places. Remembering that children, sick people and pregnant women need more fluids.

Self there is no water at home it is because something serious has happened. In the case of work on pipelines, the suspension usually lasts a few hours and you are warned earlier, but in the event of a breakdown (landslide, accident ...) the water could suddenly fail and for a long time. Or it could be a polluting contamination following breakages or infiltrations of municipal pipes. Even a flood can cause contamination of the water in the pipes and in that case you will remain with your feet soaked but without water to drink.

If it is pollution, the first thing to do is to close the main valve in the house to prevent the pollution from spreading. And then of course there is no water. Also to brush your teeth only mineral water or disinfected water should be used, ditto for cleaning contact lenses. If, on the other hand, the problem is only the lack of water, before giving up you can resort to the water resources hidden in the house: ice cubes in the freezer, water from the boiler, water from the toilet flush tank (if not chemical substances such as antifreeze or other have been added) and the water that stagnates in the pipes: open the taps on the upper floors to let air into the pipes and take the water that comes out of the taps below.

But be careful: before you use it for food or body hygiene, you have to purify the water from pollutants. Excluding a priori water contaminated by chemicals, dark-colored, smelly or containing floating matter, in other cases and in emergency situations, acceptable results can be obtained with the systems we now see. The cleaned water will not be perfectly drinkable in all respects, but at least it will be devoid of the microorganisms responsible for some diseases such as cholera, typhus and hepatitis.

What to do when there is no water

The first thing to do to make water usable is eliminate suspended particles, often the only possible operation in real emergency situations. Basically, you put the water in a container and let the impurities settle on the bottom. You can also filter the water with a clean cloth (but it must be clean) or with a paper filter for tea or American coffee.

If it is possible, it can boil the water. Boiling kills most of the microorganisms, although obviously it won't remove chemicals and heavy metals. The water should be boiled for at least 10 minutes. In the end, once it has cooled, the taste of the boiled water can be improved by pouring it several times from one container to another, to give it back a little oxygen.

Adding chlorine is a good way to purify water. Commercial disinfectant solutions based on chlorine and sodium chloride can be used. Remember that the water must have a slight chlorine flavor to be sufficiently disinfected. There are also tablets for purifying water on sale online very simple to use like the ones you see in the photo below and that you can buy on Amazon on this page. A bottle of 100 tablets will be enough to purify 2000 liters of water.

Other useful items that you can buy online are also this mini filter to purify water or this portable 5 liter tank.

These are items widely used by campers who find themselves having to disinfect the water available in the often remote areas where they stop.
