What is synergistic agriculture?
Synergistic agriculture is an agricultural practice that involves the use of ancient techniques that aim to exploit the natural fertility of the soil. The synergistic word itself indicates the strong relationship between plant and soil; on the one hand, the plant enriches the soil and improves its structure and on the other, the root system itself can exploit the microelements naturally present in the soil.
Synergistic agriculture, 4 basic rules
The synergistic vegetable garden has its roots on four supporting columns.
- The earth should not be worked to prevent its composition from being altered and consequently interrupt the chemical activity of microorganisms. Basically you won't have to dig the earth
- The soil must not be compacted to ensure proper aeration to the micro-ecosystems present in the soil; that's why the garden will have to have passages on which to walk
- The soil should not be fertilized, since fertilization occurs naturally through the permanent organic cover: it consists in covering the soil with straw and other biodegradable materials or in planting plants at different stages of growth, taking care to leave the leaves on the ground where they fall. and do not pull out the roots at the end of the life cycle.
- At least three different species must be planted in each flower bed: a legume with the purpose of fixing nitrogen in the soil, a lily (garlic, onion, leek) for its antibacterial properties and a vegetable; flowers and aromatic herbs should also be planted in the spaces left between the culture beds to ward off harmful insects.
Organization of the synergistic garden
When organizing the garden, the land must be prepared with great care, then the space between the walkways and the raised cultivated area must be prepared), which can be of any shape and size, the important thing is that you can reach in the center without being stepped on.
After sowing and transplanting, the soil will be covered with a layer of mulch making sure to cover the entire surface evenly; in this way, the soil will be protected from excessive evaporation in summer and from frosts in winter.
