There is no scientific evidence for this theory, however, certainly a lack of calcium makes the vegetable more exposed to attack by various parasites, including these hymenoptera. According to this "new theory", The hymenoptera would choosetomatoesand other vegetables both for the ease of penetration and for the temperatures of the same vegetable which would favor the hatching of the eggs. Unfortunately, following hatching, the larvae would begin to develop at the expense of the vegetable and thus theapical rot.

By inspecting the apical rot on my tomatoes, personally, I have never found any larva, nor by examining the skin of the tomato I have noticed the nest of the oviposition. For these reasons, I believe that the most accredited theory is that linked to the nutritional needs of tomatoes.

Other theories state that thecauseof theapical rotof the tomato lies in several concatenating factors such as:

  • Discontinuous irrigation
    Periods of drought alternating with excessive wetting ... in fact, even non-constant irrigations cause a bad absorption of calcium by the plants!
  • Calcium deficiency
    When calcium deficiency has been present for a long time, yellow leaves can be observed, especially younger leaves. So if you have a problem with apical rot of tomatoand notice a few tender yellowed leaves, you should provide a quick fertilization with calcium.
  • Basic pH reaction
    Too alkaline soil with a pH equal to or greater than 7. Can happen with the tomato grown in potsand irrigated with water from the fountain, rich in limestone. Irrigate with rainwater (when possible) or add half a cup of vinegar to the irrigation water.
  • Shaded display
    Incorrect sun exposure could increase the risk of apical rot, if the tomatoes get little light, move the pot!
  • Unsuitable fertilizers
    If you have fertilized the soil with fertilizer for flowering plants, you may have slowed down the absorption of calcium.

Garden centers are full of calcium-based fertilizers; make sure you choose an exclusive one that does not provide other micronutrients. You can then use a broader spectrum fertilizer when the situation has stabilized. An excellent supply of calcium is given by calcium nitrate.

Generally it is enough to add 3-4 grams of calcium nitrate for every square meter of cultivated area. For the purchase of calcium-based fertilizer (more properly, calcium nitrate), you can consult the Amazon "Calcium Nitrate" page and choose the format and offer that best reflects the quantity of plants to be fertilized. Calcium nitrate can be stored for very long periods, just be careful when opening the package or transfer it to a large hermetically sealed jar.

To prevent the problem ofapical rotand above all to support healthy plant growth, it is advisable to administer specific fertilizers for tomatoes.

I have been using fertilizer for years now "Maxicrop.".
