L'camphor oil, which is not an essential oil, can be used to massage parts of the body that are sore or have suffered a bruise. It is a massage oil with pain relieving properties, composed of camphor and an oil base which can be of various types.

Often camphor oil is also synonymous with heating oil because in sport it is used for the preparatory massage of the muscles before competitive activity. I personally remember it when I used to play football as a kid and the coach made us spread it on our thighs on cold winter Sundays before entering the pitch. I believe the recipe hasn't changed since then

Given that a good camphor oil it does not cost much and can be purchased ready-made in various shops (pharmacies, parapharmacies, herbalists, perfumeries ... and even purchased online), preparing it yourself is not very demanding if you have the ingredients available: camphor and oil base. The latter can be almond or jojoba oil, which are the most commonly used bases, or petroleum jelly which has the advantage of not deteriorating over time.

While you're at it, if you've decided to prepare yourself a camphor oil, also add some herbs to give a pleasant scent to the preparation, since that of camphor is not exactly the best for the sense of smell. Lavender and rosemary are fine because they perfume and contribute to the pain-relieving and muscle-relaxing action of camphor.

DIY camphor scented oil

  • 100 grams of oil (almonds, jojoba, petroleum jelly);
  • 7 drops of rosemary;
  • 5 drops of lavender.

Once the ingredients have been combined and mixed, there is no need to macerate because camphor is immediately soluble. Using petroleum jelly as a base, the preparation keeps longer without problems of light and temperature. The application should be done with a massage appropriate to the situation: delicate in the presence of a contusion, more energetic if it is a warming massage.
