Plants that attract beneficial insects to the vegetable garden

To defend plants from attack by parasites, we can take advantage of the action of insect antagonists of parasites. It is no coincidence that some of the best allies we have in the fight against plant parasites in the garden and / or the garden are not supplied by a chemical poison factory but by nature itself; in this case it is about insects. In this regard, we see some examples of spontaneous and ornamental species that attract useful insects in the vegetable garden.

Calendula is easily found in uncultivated meadows and along roads. Its cultivation does not require particular cultural care; just place it in full sun and always keep the soil moist, taking care to avoid water stagnation. It should be fertilized every 2 weeks with fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium. Its presence attracts hoverflies.

Belonging to the Asteraceae family, it includes several plants; the most famous species is T. erecta, an annual and rustic plant that is grown in pots even though it also grows well outdoors. Typically, the Tagetes species are annuals and must therefore be planted from March to April until the first cold. They should be placed in full sun and watered regularly. They must be fertilized every 15 days with a normal liquid fertilizer. Silence plants also attract hoverflies.

Annual plant native to Europe, it is easily found in meadows and uncultivated land and along roadsides; its typical flower is a beautiful blue color. Its cultivation is very simple, just ensure it is exposed to full sun. Its presence attracts hoverflies and ladybirds.

Common Morella
Another spontaneous plant that belongs to the vast family of Solanaceae, the same family as tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines. Known since ancient times, the common black nightshade is easily found in uncultivated fields, vineyards and especially in vegetable gardens. Up to 80 cm tall, it has a very branched stem, lanceolate or ovate leaves up to 8 cm long; the flowers are white and form ovoid berries, first green and then glossy black, which contain many seeds. Its presence attracts ladybugs and myrids.

There is another interesting and completely natural way to keep pests away from your crops, whether they are from the vegetable garden or from the garden, and that is to cultivate plants that repel the main pests.
