Bad smells in the house: how to eliminate them

THE bad smells in the house they don't get rid of with a spray of deodorant. This is what the ad would like us to believe, but that's not true. On the contrary: many sprays contain substances that compromise the quality of the air and some of them are harmful to health. The same goes for many scented candles, incense and diffusers.

The best way to eliminate the bad smells in the house, and not just to cover them, it is in the traditional 'grandmother's remedies', which also have the advantage of being easy to make and inexpensive. And if you want to use candles and essential oils, well ... that they are natural and of excellent quality. Because there is no joking with the air in the house.

Deodorant citrus pomander

Citrus pomanders are an aid against bad smells in the house and also in the closets. The ideal for making them are oranges, but tangerines and lemons are also good: take one and stuff it with cloves outside. Put it where it is needed, preferably near a heat source, and that's it. If you like, you can also create decorative designs on the peel with cloves. Pomander can also be made more than one, perhaps with different citrus fruits, and put them together in a basket.

Unpleasant odors

When the problem is important, to eliminate the bad smells in the house you need to boil a little vinegar. Bring the pot with the boiling vinegar directly into the room to be deodorized and leave it in action. The vapors will eliminate all unpleasant odors. This obviously does not replace the preventive ventilation of the environment, which must be done by keeping the windows open for at least 10 minutes.

Cat pee

The worst of bad smells in the house is cat pee. Anyone who has one of these animals knows something about it, even if it may be the neighbor's cat that leaves the memory on the threshold. The remedy is to sprinkle the stain with baking soda, leave it on for a few hours and then rinse with hot water and white vinegar.

Infusion of fragrant herbs

Bring a pot of water to a boil and add mint, eucalyptus, rosemary, sage or lemongrass. Spices such as cinnamon, cloves or green anise are also good. Turn off the heat and let the scented vapors spread around the house.

Scented candles and incense

Buy what you need in a good organic food store or herbalist's shop, leaving out low-quality products. There are some that release toxic molecules and the risk is to replace the bad smells in the house with substances harmful to health. Candles must be made with natural wax and without synthetic wicks. If you like incense we recommend these incense sticks made of 100% natural Tibetan sandalwood

Scented potpourri

A pout-purri is a composition of fragrant essences: dried citrus peel, spices, lavender, rose petals and dried jasmine flowers etc… You can prepare them yourself and once ready leave them in various places in the house. When it's time to sprinkle, put the pout-pourri in a colander over a pot of boiling water: the steam will revive colors and scents.
