When and how to repot succulents, aromatic plants, indoor plants or large plants. Advice for those who want to transfer plants during flowering. Repotting and moon.
Period for repotting the plants
The best time for repot the plants falls between March and April but only if they do not have flowers. When the potted plant blooms in spring, repotting is anticipated to February. Still, you can run therepottingin autumn, when the plant is ready for vegetative rest. This rule also does not apply to those plants that bloom in autumn.
Even in the summer you can run somerepotting. In fact, in summer they candecant(in the coolest hours of the day) winter flowering plants but also succulents that do not have flowers.
Repot a plant with flowers
Why to understandwhen to repot a plantshould flowering be considered? For the stress! With repotting the plant finds itself having toreadjustin a new container or in a new environment.Transfer a flowering plantit means putting the plant under such stress that, with a good chance, it will lose the flowers.
It is not uncommon, in fact, that a plant, after therepotting, go and lose all the leaves. If you wantdecant a plant in full bloom, do it but with the knowledge that the plant will probably not be able to adapt quickly to the new pot and, for this, it will sacrifice its flowers (or stop flowering while keeping those already developed or even make them fall). Particularly resistant plants could also keep flowering after repotting, but this is a remote probability… in short, you would be very lucky!
How to know when it's time to repot
Both the plants garden plants, both house plants, to continue their growth, need the repotting. But what do you understand when the time has come repotting a plant and how the procedure is carried out repotting of a plant?
To understand if the plant needs the repotting, observe the appearance of the root bread. If the roots are very dense it is time to repot, you can postpone the work if the roots do not completely envelop the bread of earth.
So it must necessarilytake the plant out of the potto understand if it needs repotting? No. Lift it up and look at the drain hole in the pot. Does that soil you can glimpse show roots? If you notice roots near the drain hole of the pot, repotting should be done immediately.
During the year, the best time for repot the plants it is spring or autumn, as explained above.
When to repot plants based on the moon
The moon greatly influences sowing and planting. If you have totransplant in the open ground, generally it is preferred to act with the new Moon. With the crescent moon it is possible to decant or multiply the bulbs.
With the Crescent Moon, plants are supposed to be able to quickly form new roots and adapt better to the new environment. So even for the repotting of any plant it is recommended to act with a growing moon. With the Crescent Moon, there is more energy, in the soil, everything grows and proliferates.
How to repot plants
In this paragraph we will seehow to repot plantsand in particular, how to extract the plant from the poteven when the terrain seems to be difficult to manage and very hard.
How to extract the plant from the pot
24 hours before work repotting, water the plant abundantly. This procedure is necessary to prepare the roots for the repotting: if the roots are well hydrated they will suffer less stress. Not only that, if the earthen bread is hard, irrigation by immersion could be useful even just before repotting. In practice, you will saturate the soil with water to facilitateextraction of the ground bread and the plant from the old pot.
When the earthen bread is easier to extract, thanks to the water, remove the old plant by grabbing it by the end of the stem, near the collar area (where the stem penetrates the ground).
How to prepare the roots
If the roots are dense, you need to check them. With your hands, gently unwind the skein of roots: this is the most critical moment, be careful not to break the roots. If the roots are rotting or you notice any dry or damaged roots, cut them off with a sterile pair of scissors.
How to repot, prepare the new pot
On the bottom of the new vase, place a shard with the concavity facing downwards. This is useful for allowing the irrigation water to drain without creating stagnation.
Cover the crock with 2 cm of expanded clay. The expanded clay avoids water stagnation, therefore protects the roots from rot and, at the same time, absorbs moisture and gradually releases it.
To the expanded clay layer, add a few handfuls of plant-specific soil you needdecant.
Lay down the plant from repot in the new pot and fill, with new soil, the space between the pot and the bread of earth that surrounds the roots.
To make sure you cover all the spaces, press the soil gently. Do not irrigate!
After repotting, allow at least 48 hours to administer the first irrigation and, if necessary, add more soil bringing the soil to level.
The most common mistakes when decanting a plant
In this paragraph I will point out what are the most common errors when running therepotting.
- Never bury the collar of the plant, if you do, you could cause harmful rot.
- Bury all the roots if the lower edge of the collar and the beginning of the root system is not enough "repaired ", you risk killing the plant due to exposure of the roots.
- Remember not to fertilize plants as soon as repotted. The root will already be stressed for the repotting therefore it will not be able to use the nutrients present in the fertilizer.
- Wait at least 48 hours to administer the first irrigation.
- If you use an old pot, wash it and disinfect it thoroughly to avoid exposing the plant to the risk of disease.
- Keep in mind that the plant, after repotting, may lose its leaves but you will not have to administer it for thismassive amounts of fertilizer!Give the plant some time to adapt before fertilizing.
- Don't repot freshly bought plants! After the purchase, it is always important to do a first repotting, wait for the most appropriate period (spring or autumn, or summer if it is a winter flowering plant) and also renew the soil by repotting.
The above rules apply to therepottingof thearomatic plantsjust forrepot the ficus benjamin.
Useful advice: if you have not repotted for many years, try to eliminate the earthen bread anchored to the roots so as to replace it with more fertile fresh soil.
Forrepot large plantsor for information onhow to repot a succulent plant, I refer you to the specific guides. The general rules are those seen in this article but there are some extra tips regarding the technical management of the aerial part. For example, the fat plants they have many thorns and care must be taken to repot the succulent plant without pricking.
The large plants, on the other hand, they present logistical difficulties for the management of the canopy, so it will be necessary to wrap it with sheets before performing repotting. The repotting fruit plants should never be performed during flowering or when the plant has fruit. For more info:
