It is well known that fruit is good for health, but perhaps few people know that cherries hide many important nutritional properties for our body.

Cherries are famous for carrying out a detoxifying and purifying function within our body. They have diuretic and mildly laxative properties. Among other benefits, they are excellent for fighting abdominal swelling due to constipation or excessive accumulation of intestinal gas.

The fruit of the sun lends itself to various preparations in the kitchen: in the classic cherry jam but also in many other self-produced preparations such as cherries in syrup and cherry juice.

The recipe that we want to offer you today is that of cherry jamboth in classic and natural version, that is thesugar-free cherry jam.

Cherry jam, ingredients

  • 1 kilogram of organic cherries
  • 300 grams of brown sugar
  • 1 untreated lemon
  • Sterilized jars

Useful advice: when buying cherries, check that they have a firm texture and are free from bruises. It is important that they still have the peduncle (or petiole) and that this has a bright green color, a symptom of freshness.

How to make cherry jam

Here is the procedure for obtaining an excellent onecherries' jam.

  1. Wash the cherries thoroughly, place them on a dry cloth then remove the core inside
  2. Once this is done, put them in a container and pour in the lemon juice then keep in the fridge overnight
  3. The next day, pour the cherries into a saucepan and cook for 10 minutes then add sugar or a sweetener of your choice instead of sugar: cherry jam cooks much slower than others, as it contains a lot of water, so it will take about two hours for complete cooking.
  4. When the cherries are almost completely undone, you can choose whether to leave the pieces or blend everything
  5. Take the jars that you have previously sterilized, fill them with boiling jam leaving a couple of cm from the edge
  6. Cover the jars and turn them upside down until completely cooled to ensure the vacuum seal

Yours is ready cherry jam to be consumed one month after preparation.

Always label with the date of preparation: the jam can be kept up to 12 months.

Sugar-free cherry jam

For the recipe ofnatural cherry jam, that is, without sugar, you will need only one kilogram of cherries and lemon juice.

  • 1 kg of cherries
  • juice and zest of one lemon

Light version of homemade cherry jam

To reduce the calories of cherry jam, the sugar-free version is certainly ideal. Here's how to proceed!

Wash the cherries and remove the stone. Place them in a non-stick pan and cook over low heat. Add the lemon zest and juice.

Boil the cherries' jam. Stir, from time to time, with a wooden spoon and try to keep the foam that may be created under control. After about an hour of cooking, the sugar-free cherry jamready.

To check the cooking, test the saucer: place a teaspoon of jam on a plate, tilt it and ... if the jam still needs cooking.

Once cooked, put the jam in sterilized jars. Sugar-free cherry jam should be consumed faster. As a precaution, you should sterilize the jars already filled as described in the last paragraph of this page.

Cherry and honey jam

Also in this case we propose onesugar-free recipe. In this case, the nutritional properties of the cherry are added to the benefits of honey, a natural sweetener.

The ingredients:

  • 1 kg of cherries
  • 500 grams of honey
  • an untreated lemon

The procedure is almost identical to what we saw in the first recipe except that, in this case, instead of adding sugar, you are going to put a natural sweetener.

How to sterilize jam jars

If you don't know how to sterilize the jars, you can follow the guide "How to sterilize glass jars in the microwave ". If you don't have a microwave at home, you can follow this alternative method, a little longer but equally effective:

After filling the jars with thecherry jamstill hot, transfer the jars to a pot containing water. Boil and proceed with boiling for 10 minutes.

To prevent the jars ofmarmaladecan break, wrap them individually in kitchen towels so, during boiling, the fabric will cushion the blows with the wall of the pot or the friction between the various jars placed in the water.

How to pit cherries quickly

To pit cherries quickly, you will need a pitter similar to the one used to pit olives. You can buy a cherry stoner on Amazon or in stores that specialize in kitchen utensils.

For completeness we recommend a pitter from Amazon: cherry pitter, price 11.90 with free shipping. There are also more complete and faster ones but the purchase cost increases, as is the case with Wesmark mechanical stoner which is bought at a price of 27.18 euros and is shown in the photo above.

What to do with cherry pits? You can dry them and store them for the winter ... they can be burned in some pellet stoves or bio-fireplaces (always check the manufacturer's booklet). Alternatively, you can make a delicious liqueur.
