The theme energy storage (energy storage for use in deferred time) has become much more important after the incentive tariffs on the energy produced have ended and the attention of families and businesses has shifted to self-consumption. Without incentives, it is better to use the energy produced by your photovoltaic system on your own and in full, making production and consumption coincide.
But to raise the share of self-consumption they are needed energy storage and ability to manage electrical loads, both weak points of photovoltaics. For the distribution of loads, home automation systems help, for example those that allow the refrigerator to draw more energy when the photovoltaic system is producing, or high-efficiency heat pumps (if we are talking about heating and cooling of homes ) that powered by electricity allow you to save on gas.
In the field energy storage The answer is instead in the batteries and inverters integrated with accumulations (battery inverters) that allow you to store the energy of the solar system not currently consumed and to use it when needed, for example in the evening while the system is not in production. With accumulations and systems of energy storge you can use the energy of the sun even when the sun is not there and at the same time avoid wasting the amount produced at peak times (overgeneration).
From the systems of energy storage depends on the possibility of making photovoltaics convenient even in the absence of incentives. The efficiency of systems with thermodynamic solar technology depends. But it also depends on the further growth of domestic photovoltaics of small-sized PV systems (<20 kW) which has increased exponentially since 2008. Once the technical regulations have been completed (we are talking about June) it will be possible to install the batteries, connecting them to the grid, even for the photovoltaic systems already installed. Of the latter in Italy there are over 550 thousand, for 18 thousand MW of installed power.
But where is systems technology today energy storage? And how much do the batteries cost? Even with current prices, the investment has acceptable return prices. In view of the greater diffusion, however, these components are expected to drop in prices of 40-50% over 3-4 years thanks to economies of scale.
Indicatively, an investor could obtain an overall benefit of about 270 euros / year from the purchase of an accumulation system energy storage (About 100 euros for system benefits and about 170 euros for savings in the bill) with which to repay the cost of the system itself. Some trade associations, for example ANIE Energia, argue that benefits for the country system could derive from the adoption of temporary support tools.
