Plant lice: natural remedies and effective treatmentsto eliminate plant lice. From natural products to DIY macerated products.
Plant lice, what are they
With the common definition of plant lice we mean the aphids, of different color depending on the species to which they belong, which live in colonies of thousands of individuals and gather hungry on the terminal part of the young branches, of the stems and near the flowers and leaves.
THE plant lice they feed on the sap and by sucking it cause the leaves to curl up until they die. Furthermore, with their bites they can transmit viral infections to the infested plant and their sugary secretions (to identify them follow the ants who are greedy for them) are the cause of fungal attacks such as fumaggine.
THEplant lice, better defined asaphids, I'm asuperfamily of sucking insectsvoracious. Theaphidsthey have abiological cyclevery complex. These insects multiply from year to year, overcoming even the cold of winter. They quickly colonize the environment and with the formerhotseasonal invading our plants.
THEgreen plant licethey are frequent on many ornamental plants such as hibiscus but can also invade horticultural species. Black plant lice attack fruit plants but do not disdain anything else if necessary! In the photo below, theblack aphidson a burdock leaves, a spontaneous herbaceous plant.
Still, they existpink plant lice, gray, orange, yellow ... Although, as stated, the most common are green aphids. THEyellow plant licethey are also called "oleander aphids" because they often attack these plants but, like all voracious insects, they do not disdain any ornamental plant.
The months of the alert against plant lice are those in spring, April and May in particular, because the virulence of the parasites coincides with the rhythm of vegetative activity. In addition, the development of aphids is favored by fertilizations, typical in spring, by the humidity that is not lacking in spring and by the milder climate.
It is therefore in this period that we must be particularly careful and intervene promptly with the right products.
If your plants have already been infested with aphids in the past, then it is advisable to occasionally carry out preventive treatments. Like fertilization, with the arrival of the first spring warmth, do a good prevention using one of the natural remedies that we will describe.
Plant lice, natural remedies
Natural remedies are useful when the infestation is in its infancy or as a preventive treatment. In case of persistent and extensive infestations on multiple plants, it is good to consider the use of some "safe for the environment" products that we will describe later.
Our advice in the fight against plant lice is to use natural insecticides and organic remedies of those that can also be prepared at home. THEnatural remedies they don't hurt and if used frequently, they work just as much as chemical ones.
The first of all remedies for plant lice, after cleaning the leaves as much as possible and removing the infested parts, it is the good old nettle macerate. The nettle macerate is widely used in organic farming, it has also shown a certain effectiveness to eliminate the most persistent infestations but it is necessary to carry out repeated treatments.
How is it prepared?
Fresh or dried nettles are left to macerate in 10 liters of water. You will need 500 grams of dried nettle or 1 kg of fresh nettle. Remove the roots of the nettles and place them in boiling water. Let them macerate for 4 days, filter and use the residual liquid for thetreatment against plant lice. The liquid must be sprayed over the entire plant.
Extra advice on nettle macerate and garden care
Nettles are wild herbs, too often considered weeds. In fact, these "weeds" are very useful in the kitchen and, if you spot them in your garden, harvest them while they are tender. You can boil them and prepare an excellent omelette. The cooking water can become a perfect garden fertilizer!
The best nettles are harvested with the first heat of summer. If, in your garden, you don't have nettles, you can buy the macerates from garden centers and agricultural consortia. Nettle macerate is such a "powerful" remedy that it could not be missing on Amazon where it is sold in concentrated 1-liter packs. Generally, 100 ml is diluted in 5 liters of water but always read the directions because each manufacturer has concentrations and dosages of their own.
How much? The nettle macerate gets paid a bit like allnatural and organic remedies(so it's best if you make it yourself!). On Amazon, a one-liter bottle costs around 19 - 25 euros with shipping costs included in the price. For all the info:nettle macerate.
Against i plant lice the macerate of tobacco also works well, which also has a pleasant aromatic scent. How is it prepared? A 1 liter solution is obtained by mixing two parts of water and one part of denatured alcohol. To the liquid are added 2 glasses of strong tobacco, the cheapest you can find on the market. Mix and leave to macerate for 4 days, filter and use the liquid obtained as a treatment.
For the lice affecting roses the soap solution that is prepared with Marseille soap flakes in a little hot water is also fine. Also against rose lice, especially green lice, garlic is useful, which is an excellent pesticide for plants and some cloves of which can be inserted into the soil for a long-lasting effect.
An excellent natural remedy against plant liceand it is also a solution based on propolis. Propolis acts as a natural antibiotic, pesticide and antifungal. How is it prepared? In the article "propolis for plant care”You will find the complete recipe for this effective natural pesticide. Don't be fooled, even if you are not familiar with these ingredients, it is very easy to find even in the supermarket.
Propolis is a very powerful remedy that can also be used in case of infestations already in progress. It is widely used in organic farming.
Pyrethrum, natural insecticide
If the infestation ofaphidsis very extensive, the natural remedies listed could be joined or replaced by a more effective substance, albeit equally natural!
The pyrethrum, before being a natural insecticide, it's a plant! Its active ingredient, pyrethrin, is very effective in counteracting most of the vegetable and garden pests, plant liceincluded.
The treatments are generally effective even if it affects the temperature a lot. Better to perform pyrethrum-based treatments with temperatures below 26 ° C. The treatment should be performed in the evening, after sunset, so the sun will not be able to affect the effectiveness of its active ingredient.
Thepyrethrumis effective against:
1. plant lice
2. pentatomides such as crop bugs and green bugs
4. myrides as the vector of the potato mosaic virus
6. white fly
7. Lepidoptera larvae
9. common fly and mosquitoes
10. many other plant parasitic insects
There are several pyrethrum-based insecticides on the market, they can be purchased in the form of powder, spray or concentrated liquid solution, to be diluted with water before use. L'natural insecticide pyrethrum-based can be purchased at specialized garden centers or can be purchased online: a package of Solabiol Piretro Actigreen Bio is offered on Amazon at a price of € 15.25 with free shipping.
