When it comes to cultivation of hemp we refer to the 'Cannabis sativa' variety, used for a long time in the textile industry and more recently in construction for thermal insulation: the performance is the same as that of coconut fiber but with a more favorable energy balance resulting from the proximity of the raw material. In Italy the cultivation of hemp is growing and production is expected to double in 2014.

Therefore, we are not referring to 'Cannabis indica', known as marijuana and whose cultivation is prohibited because it is considered a psychotropic substance. The difference between the two hemp varieties lies in the quantity of resin on the inflorescences, that is, in the secretion of the plant where the cannabinoids are concentrated, among which THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, responsible for the psychoactive effects) is the most important.

The Italian law provides indications on how to grow hemp specifying that the cultivation of hemp it is legal if the percentage of THC is less than 0.2% and if the circular no. 1 of 8 May 2002 of the MIPAAF (Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies) is respected. That said, the spread of the cultivation of hemp in Italy it could represent an economic and environmental driving force.

This is the position of AssoCanapa, which organized a conference on the subject scheduled for March 22 in Casal di Principe in the province of Caserta. This is the third appointment after the stages in February of Celano (L'Aquila) and Pianiga (Venice), both of which are very popular. On the agenda are the exchange of information and the concertation of actions to disseminate the cultivation of hemp in Italy and promote its culture in all its possible uses.

The Casal di Principe convention (c / o the Parco della Legalità municipal theater) is sponsored by numerous local authorities: Campania Region, Agrorinasce, Casal di Principe Municipality, Casapesenna Municipality, San Cipriano d'Aversa Municipality, San Marcellino, Municipality of Santa Maria la Fossa, Municipality of Villa Literno, ConfAPI Industria Campania and the Innovation and Development Department of SMEs in Campania.

This is because, according to AssoCanapa, favoring the cultivation of hemp (hempiculture) has the meaning of giving an answer to the demand that comes from the territory of relaunching agriculture, environmental protection, supplementary income for farmers, energy saving, and production of alternative goods to hazardous waste, for example rock wool, wool of glass and polystyrene in construction and mulching sheets in agriculture and gardening.
