How to brush your teeth

Learn to wash teeth correctly is an important practice to stay healthy and prevent caries and gingivitis problems such as to require a visit to the dentist with related costs.

So let's see almost are the recommendations on how to brush your teeth effectively without damaging enamel and gums.

The tools for proper oral hygiene

Toothbrush, toothpaste is dental floss are the three fundamental tools for correct oral hygiene.

The bristles of the brushes have different degrees of softness: regardless of the choice, the goal remains to not use too much force to avoid damaging the enamel but at the same time to remove the plaque, focusing above all on the correct movement of the toothbrush.

Even more important is to change the toothbrush every 3 months at the latest even if, as recommended by my trusted dentist, Dr. Guidazzi, the wear times of a toothbrush are strictly personal and vary in relation to various elements including the pressure exerted. The toothbrush should therefore be examined frequently and changed when the bristles begin to slightly open and bend.

The main reason for this recommendation lies in the fact that worn bristles reduce the effectiveness of cleaning and risk scratching the enamel of the teeth.

THE toothpastes have evolved considerably in recent years, so as to ensure, in addition to the freshness of the mouth, additional beneficial actions, which vary according to the type and brand chosen.

There are specific toothpastes to relieve gingival sensitivity, to promote the remineralization of the teeth, containing for example amine fluoride and also specific toothpastes to combat bad breath.

The dental floss Unfortunately, it is the tool used consistently by a much lower percentage of people in relation to the one who uses toothbrush and toothpaste: however, for dentists it remains an indispensable tool for brushing teeth well and ensuring proper dental hygiene.

How to use the toothbrush to brush your teeth

One of the most important recommendations for brushing your teeth correctly is to use the toothbrush moving it from the gums towards the outside of the teeth.

This video made by Dr. Anna Maria Pescatore, Dental Surgeon, at Studio Pescatore in Genoa clearly shows how to proceed.

An important indication, also present in this video, concerns the time to devote to effectively perform the teeth washing: not less than 2 minutes! It is therefore an operation to be performed slowly and without haste.

To eliminate any risk of bad breath, we will also have to use the toothbrush on the tongue and cheeks, so as to remove all bacteria.

Another recommendation from my dentist, Dr. Guidazzi, is to use dental floss before the possible use of a mouthwash. In my case, when I see that the gums are a little inflamed, I resort to a chlorhexidine-based mouthwash (0.12%) with immediate positive effects.

However, the use of a chlorhexidine-based mouthwash should not last too long, especially if at high concentrations, to avoid possible yellowing of the teeth.

Problems related to poor oral hygiene

In addition to tooth decay, gum inflammation and periodontitis, which occur in the mouth, poor oral hygiene can also lead to disorders in other areas of our body.

A recent study commissioned by the Scottish Government which involved 11,000 people found that brushing your teeth a little and badly can represent a serious risk to our health, not only as regards the oral cavity but also for the cardiovascular system determined by the formation of atherosclerotic plaques within the blood vessels resulting from poor oral hygiene.

Even from a purely economic point of view, the advantages linked to correct oral hygiene are evident: the cost and time required for correct prevention is considerably lower than that linked to the interventions of dentists and cardiologists. … Without considering the "pain factor" that helps keep some of us away from a dentist's care.

Wash your teeth welli, with the right tools and dedicating the right time, agrees so from all points of view: don't forget it and you will certainly improve your well-being!
