All plants require care and attention, especially those that we try to adapt to the home environment while in nature they live in very different conditions, this is the case oforchid.
Among the most important interventions to be done to ensure and preserve the health oforchid figure the repotting. Therepottingit is the right time to renew the substrate, add nutrients and prune the roots. Let's see in detail how to repot the orchid following some useful indications.
When to repot the orchid? The period and the needs of the plant
You can proceed to repotting the orchid in three cases:
- If the old pot has become too small.
Do you understand by looking at the roots, do they fill all the space?
- If the soil * is deteriorated or too wet.
- If mold develops on the roots, substrate and plant.
When to decant orchids?
Theperiodbest forrepottheorchidsfalls in autumn, when the plants have already lost their flowers. It can also be practiced in early spring.
Therepotting, in fact, it is practiced onorchids without flowers. Repotting in advance could cause the flowers to fall off due to severe plant stress.
When we perform arepotting(and this is true for all plants) we must choose aperiodin which the plant is at rest because in this way the roots will have time to adapt to the new substrate without compromising the growth of the plant which, at rest, is arrested.
Every when to repot?
The best way to understand when to repot is to observe the roots but if you do not have a transparent pot, generally orchids they must be repotted every two-three years, renewing the flaked and deteriorated substrate and eliminating any dry roots.
Soil for orchids
Orchid is not real soil. Orchids are equipped with an aerial root system so they require a particular substrate that carries out support activities.
For this purpose, a specific substrate is used consisting of more or less coarse fragments of bark and shavings that allow the plant to cling and support itself and that ensure good drainage of the irrigation water.
Where to buy orchid substrate?
In garden centers or taking advantage of online shopping. On Amazon, for example, an excellent product can be bought at a price of 13.30 euros with free shipping costs. It is a substrate in grains, pine shavings and trace minerals, specific for orchids.
For all information on the product mentioned, I refer you to the Amazon page: Seramis substrate
Regardless of the product you choose, keep in mind that many garden centers offer soils for orchids and other plants, avoid substrates that can adapt as you run the risk of seeing some mold on the roots. Choose a substrate for exclusive use and that is made up of coarse fragments, even better if enriched with minerals.
If you have a pine plant or you often walk through coniferous woods, you can use DIY soil by shredding the bark, however this practice is not recommended because with home DIY you have no way to use inert materials. In short, you could add bark already populated by parasites, already affected by an asymptomatic bacteriosis for the original plant but dangerous for the orchid. Make your assessments: do you want to put the health of your orchid at risk?
What you need for repotting
In addition to the substrate for orchids, for therepottingyou will need a new container, a pair of sterile scissors and a brush. The vase? Better if in transparent plastic so you can monitor the growth and health of the roots. Plus, orchid roots need light.
How to repot orchids
Remove the plant of orchid from the old pot it is in, taking special care not to damage the roots.
Carefully clean the entire root system from deposits and remains of the old substrate. At this stage, you may need a brush or a soft bristle brush.
Carefully remove the damaged or dead parts with the help of the special garden shears, check that they are disinfected first to avoid compromising the health of the plant.
Prepare, in the new pot, a first layer of substrate, on which you will lay the roots and the plant. Orchids need substrates that do not retain water and that allow the roots to stay in a fairly oxygenated compound. What does it mean? That you don't have to press the substrate in any way.
Make sure, before proceeding to repotting, that the new container has the right number of drainage holes: orchids are ornamental plants that do not like stagnation, therefore it is good that the pot favors a quick drain of water, in order to prevent the root level from rotting.
Just done the repotting do not water theorchid for about 7/10 days but vaporize the foliar apparatus once a day.
