Aluminum recycling, all the info

Aluminum recycling: info onaluminum recycling. Potential earnings, price per kg and where the aluminum produced at home is thrown away. Advice on how to recycle aluminum at home.

The aluminum recycling saves up to 95 percent of the energy required for the production of virgin aluminum, thus avoiding the corresponding CO2 emissions.

Some companies carry out the phases of the entire supply chain ofaluminum recycling: from the collection to the production of new material. The aluminum obtained from recycling is defined as "second raw material " precisely because it can be used like thevirgin aluminumbut it derives from hissecond life.

Aluminum recycling path

The image above shows the production chain of aluminum cans starting from aluminum conferred with separate collection: with a series of machinery, thealuminum conferred with separate waste collection, it is first cleaned, then sieved and melted.

Following the merger, the aluminum derived from separate collection first takes the form of blocks / ingots and then is transformed into a thinner sheet for the production of new cans.

As with the production of cans, there is also a continuation in the transport sector reuse of the same resources asaluminum. About 95 percent ofaluminum used in the automotive sector is collected in Europe, recycled through a short and reused supply chain for new automotive components.

Aluminum recycling: separation and melting phases

Similarly to the recycling of cans, even the chain ofrecyclingof the components inaluminumof the automotive industry sees a phase of separation, purification, melting of the material collected for production from scratch.

The plants of aluminum recyclingoperating in the transport sector, after collecting the scrap they separatealuminumfrom other metal alloys. L'aluminumafter being melted it is transformed into blocks for the production of new components.

Classification of aluminum for recycling

The two cases reported above exemplify, in a simplistic way, the supply chain of aluminum recycling.

Actually the scrap of aluminum normally marketed are classified into several categories:

- non-alloy scrap;
- scrap wires and cables;
- scrap in a single plastic processing alloy;
- scrap in two or more plastic processing alloys of the same series of alloys;
- scrap in two or more alloys from plastic processing;
- scrap in castings;
- scrap derived from shredding processes
- Scrap derived from aluminum separation processes from non-ferrous shredded material
- used aluminum cans
- aluminum and copper radiators
- supplies of a single alloy
- mixed aluminum of two or more alloys
- used aluminum packaging
- used and uncoated aluminum packaging
- slag and various foundry residues

Virgin aluminum vs recycled aluminum

L'aluminum virgin is produced and extracted from bauxite mines. The bauxite mineral is extracted from reserves scattered all over the world so the energy costs of extraction must be added to those related to transport.

Bauxite is generally found in underground deposits at a depth of 4-6 meters, so a field preparation must be carried out before extraction.

The process of aluminum recycling uses only 5 percent of the energy used for the production ofaluminum primary from bauxite, with thealuminum recyclingenvironmental and economic costs are reduced.

From an economic point of view, therecycling of materialsit is not always beneficial. For example, in economic terms, recycling glass is not always convenient. On the contrary, thealuminum recyclingit has a strong economic value so much to guaranteeearningsto the promoters and companies that deal with it.

Recycle aluminum, earnings:is it worth selling aluminum?

Collecting and selling aluminum is not a business to be underestimated. The price for each kg (kilogram) of aluminum delivered is € 0.50. Not bad if you think that the cost for each kg of PET plastic amounts to € 0.18 while for a kg of paper destined for recycling the price drops to € 0.05. In practice, aluminum is the best-paid metal in the field of recycling (excluding rare earths and precious metals such as copper, silver, platinum, gold ...).

In reality, it is not easy to estimate the price per kilogram or per quintal of aluminum to be recycled. Who intendssell aluminum for recyclingshould contact the nearest aluminum recovery centers. The price per kilogram depends on the purity and condition of the material but also on the distance: if the collection point is very far away, the estimate could reduce the transport / collection costs from the price of the aluminum for recycling.

The price of pure metal is around 1700 euros per ton, but this is a very different cost than that required for aluminum destined for recycling.

Where aluminum is thrown away

To understand which aluminum can be recycled, just stick to thewaste acronyms. The acronym is found on recyclable aluminumTo theor Alu. All containers which, despite being made of aluminum, are labeled with the letter T or F should not be disposed of in the separate collection of aluminum: these containers must be disposed of in the collection of hazardous waste as they are dirty with solvents, glues, herbicides, acids and other chemicals dangerous.
