In August in the garden cabbage and some other vegetables are transplanted. The seeds will then have to be collected and for this it will be good to mark some beautiful fruit of tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers, peppers, aubergines and watermelons to let them ripen and to get the seed for the next year. Also in August in the vegetable garden the harvest of vegetables is abundant, but more than in the other months it is necessary to take care to do it at the right time.
Towards the end of August the garden must be cleaned well from the weeds and at the same time the vegetables that bear fruit, such as tomatoes, aubergines and the others mentioned above, must also be pruned a little, so that they can enjoy the rays of a slightly weaker sun than in July and reach the ripening properly, also to produce good seeds.
They are sown in the garden in August: garlic (you can start towards the end of the month), chard, carrots, cabbage, kohlrabi (for autumn), chicory, onions, watercress, fennel, lettuce (for autumn), leeks, parsley, spinach (for autumn). As for onions, in August those for next year are sown and planted whole to obtain onions to be eaten fresh, using leeks in early spring.
They are harvested in the garden in August: cabbage and cabbage (those sown in March are harvested), potatoes (the harvest will continue in September), onions (those sown from February to April), all vegetables for current consumption and, at the appropriate time, those intended to produce the sowers for next year.
In the garden in August particular attention should be paid to the water supply. It is true that thunderstorms usually do their part (sometimes too much), but in the absence and in the driest areas it is good to provide watering frequent and balanced. The general rule is to always wet well: you should not give little water, but always enough when you give it. When it comes to sown flower beds, and this is the period, delicate watering with rose sprinklers or very fine sprayers are needed to avoid damaging the seeds.
