Let's start immediately explaining how to solve one of the most annoying problems in terms of cleaning your iron: what to do to remove burnt plastic from the plate.

Our advice is to use a sheet of newspaper sprinkled with a detergent powder to pass your iron on.

Alternatively, you can use a sheet of tinfoil on which you will have to spread fine kitchen salt: by passing the iron over the foil sheet, you will free the plate from the plastic using the abrasive effect of the salt.

Among the actions NOT to do to clean plastic from the iron plate, we mention the use of metal objects as you could damage or scratch it.

Products for cleaning the iron

There are several specific products on the market for cleaning iron, are in stick or paste. These products are quite effective especially for those who find themselves with a completely burnt plate but have considerable disadvantages.

These products have a strong ammonia smell, are relatively expensive and should be used with caution. They can damage the skin or even irritate the airways (if inhaled).

Among the products on the market we point out the two most effective and least harmful.

Stick General fix wax
It is suitable for both steam iron soleplatethan that of a normal iron. The manufacturer describes it as "ecological and non-polluting", in fact it does not contain waxes but ... when you use it you will smell of ammonia so be careful not to inhale the vapors. For this procedure it is sufficient to heat the iron only slightly. Rub a slightly abrasive sponge on the plate accompanied by a paste made from distilled water and sodium bicarbonate. If not, you can just wipe with a microfiber cloth together with the baking soda.

The limescale will not only be concentrated on the plate but also along the pipes and in the steam holes. To clean it, you can use the following method:

  1. Fill the tank with white vinegar and turn on the iron.
  2. While it heats up, shake the iron well to break up the limescale deposits in the tank and pipes.
  3. Then put the iron over the sink and press the steam and / or water button several times to release the vinegar from the holes in the plate.
  4. Empty the remaining vinegar from the iron and fill the tank with water.
  5. Heat again and let out the steam to completely eliminate the vinegar.

If necessary, repeat all these steps until the limescale is completely eliminated.
