Multiplication by cuttings: all the useful instructions and the step by step procedure for the rose, the pyracanth, the jasmine and all the plant cuttings.

There multiplication of plants by cuttings it is a procedure that allows to obtain new plant specimens and can be carried out by following our instructions.

The flowering species that are most suitable for multiplication by cuttings are: primrose, jasmine, geranium, azalea, rose .... But not only flowering plants can be multiplied by cuttings. Many shrub species such as maple, oleander, fig, willow ... and even succulent plants can be multiplied by cuttings; an example? The aloe vera cutting is extremely simple and does not require the use of hormones to improve the rooting of the severed part.

Multiplication by cuttings, directions

There cutting it is a vegetative part of the plant that is removed to obtain the multiplication of the plant itself in the soil. The parts to be taken can be the branches and stems, leaves and roots. Obviously in order to proceed with the multiplication by cuttings it is necessary that there are precise characteristics:

  • If you want to proceed on the branch or on the stems they must have a leaf node
  • If you want to proceed on the roots, it is important that they are external and very fleshy.

Multiplication by cuttings, the procedure

The instructions for multiplying plants by cuttings are universal and can be applied to any type of plant, however specific cases will follow on the page. We will refer you to some guides for the multiplication by cutting of rose, piracanta, jasmine, azalea, fig ... In the meantime, here is the universal procedure to be able tomultiply plants by cuttings:

  1. Cutting
Cut the cutting, using a sterilized blade.
  2. Protect the plant
Apply biological fungicide to the severed part of the mother plant to prevent disease from spreading. Attention, the fungicide should not be put on the cutting but on the cut plant.
  3. The length of the woody and semi-woody cutting
If it is a lignified stem, take a cutting that has a length of about 10 cm (woody or semi-woody cutting), if instead it is a non-lignified stem (green cutting) the length must be about twenty centimeters
  4. The mother plant
When making the cutting, make sure that the mother plant is in good health, with a luxuriant appearance and healthy growth.
  5. Topsoil
Take the cutting and place it in a sterilized container. Fill the container with sterilized soil suitable for that type of vegetable: the sterilization of the soil can be done through heat, in an oven or stove at about one hundred and twenty degrees, or by using fungicidal products. For the quality of the soil it is good to know that some cuttings need to grow in a soil with an acid pH while others require neutral.
  6. Rooting
After choosing the most suitable soil, the cutting will be planted respecting the initial polarity: the part that was at the top of the mother plant must have the same position in the new container as well. The final planting takes place only after rooting.

In the following image, we show you the scheme to follow to multiply a plant by cutting. In figure 2 the leaves placed at the base of the cutting are removed, leaving only several pairs of leaves in the apical area of the cut branch.

Multiplication by cuttings, useful tips

  • Make sure that the soil is still draining to avoid water stagnation.
  • To improve the soil, you can add sand, pumice and expanded clay to make it more draining, or organic substances such as peat and humus to increase fertility.
  • Since the cuttings do not have roots, they run the risk of drying out, therefore it is advisable to place them in shady places, making sure that the soil is always moist, without exceeding with water.
  • For greater safety, the containers can be covered with a PVC sheet, to be raised periodically in order to ventilate the plants.
  • Herbaceous cuttings can be planted as soon as they form the roots, the same cannot be said for woody cuttings, where it will be necessary to wait at least two years.

Multiplication of the rose by cutting

The cutting of roses can be both woody (better defined as semi-woody)both of the foliar type. For all the instructions on how to multiply the rose by cuttings, refer to the pages:

  • branch or leaf rose cutting
  • rose cutting, how to do it

Multiplication of jasmine by cutting

Jasmine is easy to multiply by cuttings. There multiplication of jasmine by cutting has many advantages and it is possible to obtain a good number of specimens in a short time.

The best time? To have more chances of taking root, proceed in autumn or spring. For the multiplication of jasmine by cutting, it will be necessary to remove some branches from the mother plant which must be divided into parts about 10 cm long. These branches must be placed to root in a mixture of fertile soil and peat, preferably first impregnated with a rooting hormone.

Multiplication of piracanta by cutting

The recommended period to proceed with themultiplication of piracanta by cuttingit falls in late spring or early autumn for northern Italy and the center-north, while in the south and center-south it can be done in early spring or late autumn. All instructions on howmultiply the pyracanta by cuttingare contained in the pageCutting of Piracanta.

Multiplication by fig cuttings

Even if it is a woody cutting, a twig of 20 cm is taken. Choose the youngest branch of the plant and follow the instructions on the page "Fig cutting“.

Division by cuttings: the rooting hormone

The use of active ingredients that stimulate the rooting of the plant is strongly recommended in the case of woody and semi woody cuttings. It is not necessary in the case of leaf cuttings or easily rooted cuttings such as that of aloe vera, basil or rosemary which easily root in peat or even in water.

For all semi-woody and woody cuttings (fig, rose, piracanta ...) we recommend the use of a rooting hormone to increase the chances of taking root. It will be necessary to impregnate the base of the cut branch (cutting) in order to increase the possibility of rooting.

How to do? Before burying the cutting in its rooting substrate, impregnate the base of thecuttingin a stimulating product for woody cuttings and woody seeds such as the rooting powder "Verde vivo", offered on Amazon with free shipping at the price of € 12.60. There are many rooting agents available on the web and on Amazon, you are spoiled for choice.
