Turnip head? Thank you!

If they tell you that you are one turnip head do not be offended. Indeed, be flattered to have been associated with a vegetable that has many virtues.

There turnip it tastes delicious, even if some can't stand it, and it is incomparable as a side dish to certain dishes (roasts for example). But above all the turnip it has many nutritional properties and as many medicinal virtues.

Where do the turnips? From the large cabbage family (so don't be offended even they say cabbage head) and in fact they are somewhat strange cabbages that develop 'all in root' or 'all in seeds' (depending on the environment) instead of leaves.

There are several variety of turnip which differ in the shape of the root. The best known are five, three with round and voluminous roots (the turnip properly called, kohlrabi and rutabaga) and two with thin roots (rapeseed and rape).

Cabbage excluded turnip which belongs to a different species, of the first type the underground root full of nutritional elements is used; of the others, the seeds are used as feed for livestock or to obtain an oil, rapeseed oil, which is also a biofuel.

If you decide to cultivate turnipswhich is very simple, remember never to use aggressive insecticides. The reason is obvious: rapeseed flowers are not self-fertilizing and totally depend on bees for pollination. If these precious insects are eliminated, the entire crop will go up in smoke.

There turnip root it is particularly rich in vitamins, sugars and mineral salts. If you grate it and let it soak in milk sweetened with honey, you will have an excellent natural cough syrup and an adjuvant in case of bronchitis.

Turnip syrup. In addition to cough milk, you can make yourself a very good one turnip syrup. Do this: dig one very deep turnip rather large and fill the cavity with candied sugar or honey. At this point, place the turnip on a glass and wait for the syrup to pass through the pulp by itself.
