When, how much and how to mow the lawn

A lot and seldom or a little and often? If the first question is when cut the grass, the correct answer is 'little and often'. In fact, the mowed lawns are rarely easier to weaken, to take diseases and to be attacked by weeds; furthermore, the cutting of tall and rooted grass, which more than a cut becomes a mowing, often involves the tearing of the roots and serious damage to the turf.

Better for a healthy lawn, and not just for an aesthetic reason cut the grass removing as little grass as possible: one set per week can be fine. On the market there are robotic lawnmowers for lawn care that do everything themselves at preset times, even every day. Of course the surface to be cut must not be too large, let's say no more than 800 square meters, but being able to afford it these devices give great advantages to lawn perfectionists.

Aside from the time savings, cut the grass every day allows to eliminate only the regrowth and to leave the chopped grass on the ground (if the mowing system is mulching) which becomes a precious fertilizer and mulch layer. In this way it is possible to have a splendid lawn even without external additions of fertilizer.

Be careful though. If you want cut the grass leaving the grass on the ground you need to make sure not only that it is well chopped, but also that the lawn has good microbial activity, whether it is neutral or slightly acidic (you can check this with a pH meter) and without felt. If these conditions do not all occur at the same time, the operation risks being harmful. Keep in mind that chopped grass contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in an 8: 1: 5 ratio.

Even mulching with cut grass, which we mentioned earlier, is a delicate operation to manage. If it is not done correctly it can in fact be harmful because it causes fungal attacks and other diseases. The risk increases in proportion with humidity and is therefore to be avoided in excessively rainy periods. In any case, it should be reserved only for lawns that are frequently cut, well ventilated and light.

If the result we expect from the cut the grass it is a nice turf, the height of the grass should be left between 2 and 4 centimeters, which in itself involves very frequent cuts, especially in spring and autumn. In summer, to avoid drying out of the soil and the consequent thinning of the grass, it is advisable to leave an extra couple of centimeters. In any case, no more than one third of the height of the leaves should be removed at each cut; this means that it is allowed to grow too much and then cut short, the grass suffers.

On how cut the grass, the first thing to be clear about is the difference between a lawn mower and a brush cutter. The latter is not suitable for maintenance or turf care cuts and is used only when the grass is too high or the ground is too rough to pass with the lawnmower. Another thing is the lawnmower, but here the difference is less marked, which is suitable for fine work. There are cordless electric lawnmowers or with internal combustion engine. The same for lawnmowers: the difference is made by the performance and the cutting system, with rotating blade, helical blade or mulching. It all depends on the result you want to achieve and… on the size of the lawn. For some info you can read our articles: which lawnmower to choose; useful advice on choosing a lawn mower.
