DOP is the acronym of Protected Designation of Origin, IGP that of Protected Geographical Indication. But there are also the Traditional Product and the native germplasm. These are some of the acronyms of the quality of food made in Italy that can be found on the products on the market, but what do they mean?
There Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is a recognition governed by the European Community Regulation n ° 2081/92 in article 2. It is assigned to agricultural and food products originating in a specific region, country or place that in the stages of production, transformation and processing - in which each process must comply with a production specification - are carried out in the same geographical area.
The geographical area that describes a DOP it must be delimited and characterized by a recognized and established expert opinion. This is because in one DOP the quality and characteristics of the product are essentially or exclusively due to the geographical environment, including natural and even human factors.
Different from DOP is theProtected Geographical Indication (IGP) which refers to the name of a region, a well-defined place or, but only in exceptional cases, a country, and which serves to designate a specific agricultural or food product originating in that region, place or country. The PGI indicates that the quality of the branded product is attributed to the geographical origin of the product and that the production, transformation or processing takes place in the defined geographical area.
Another thing is the Traditional Products, which to be called that on the label must be registered in a list of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry which is updated every year. According to the Ministerial Decree of 18 July 2000, with the indication Traditional product we mean agro-food products whose processing, conservation and maturing methods are consolidated over time, practiced in the territory in a homogeneous way and according to traditional rules handed down over time. A product is a Traditional product if the recipe has been handed down for at least 25 years.
Also autochthonous germplasm they are registered in a list of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies updated every year. The concept is linked to that of indigenous genetic resources, namely that each plant has a geographic spread coinciding with the area in which it originated and evolved. In Greek auto means same and chthon is the earth: a native plant is the one inextricably linked to the territory.
