Urban deposits, from recycling to 3D printing


The waste we produce every day can represent excellent resources and this is highlighted by the initiativeUrban fields. Ecodesign, workshop ofcreative recycling, focus on organic materials and low environmental impact aperitifs. Sustainability must characterize every daily behavior, starting with the kitchen: there was no lack of one eventshowcookingwho showed how to cook the so-called "food waste ".

The event was held between 22 and 24 November and counted over 2,500 admissions, not bad for the first edition. It took place at Cascina Cuccagna in Milan where local citizens showed a strong interest in environmental sustainability issues in terms ofrecycling, reuse, reduction and innovation.

There was also an exhibition entitled "Design 100% recycle" on creative recycling, a "Homage to compost" with its biodegradable and compostable materials, as well as a stand capable of showing the latest younger innovations:3D printerscapable of producing objects with bioplastics.

Many are the expectations of "Urban Fields ": in the Lombard capital, waste collection represents 42.5% of the waste produced. The data released by AMSA are clear, each Milanese confers an average of 90 kg of wet per year. Monaco, one of the most virtuous European cities collects only 50.9 kg… it is clear that the road to sustainability is still uphill and Milan is still in its infancy; just as clear and palpable is the enthusiasm of the citizens and the desire to improve.

As part of the event, the success of + LAB, the 3D printing laboratory in bioplastic of the Chemistry Department of the Politecnico di Milano which for the more than 30 hours of opening had an incessant flow of public, interested in learning about the great potential offered by this new sustainable frontier of technology. The conceptual pillars behindUrban fieldsare simple: reduce the number of waste that each citizen produces, correctly collect what is thrown away, recycle materials, reuse what can still be useful, rethink, through research, what cannot yet be recycled, recover objects or materials identifying new functions.
