Bamboo: quality and characteristics

Did you know that the bamboo does it have hardness characteristics equal to those of steel? And what can withstand a compression of twice the weight of that which can be borne by concrete? Perhaps not because this extraordinary material is not well known in the West and is little used in construction, where it lends itself very well to structural uses with load-bearing functions (as they have known since ancient times in Eastern countries).

In the stress tests the bamboo it has demonstrated high tensile and compressive strengths, moreover it is extremely flexible which makes it very suitable for constructions with anti-seismic characteristics. In addition to shells for structural use, with the bamboo worked, natural parquet floors similar to those of wood can also be made, while the finer weaves are used to create reinforcements for the external thermal insulation of buildings.

From the botanical point of view, the bamboo belongs to the species of grasses (those that cause a lot of allergies) and there are different types that in some cases reach considerable size in length and circumference. The stem, which constitutes the most important part of the plant, is cylindrical, articulated, knotty and flexible. The robustness characteristics are exceptional as mentioned.

The bamboo is it ecological and is it suitable for green building? To begin with the bamboo it is cheap and available in large quantities because the plant of the most widespread genus grows very quickly (even several meters in a single year) and is present in different regions of the world. Even in the Italian latitudes, for those interested, it is perfectly and easily cultivable.

The use of the bamboo for construction purposes it has no environmental contraindications of any kind (natural origin, very low energy impacts of collection and processing, disposable at the end of life) except for energy expenditure and pollution if the raw material comes from afar. The only caveat when it comes to bamboo if anything, it concerns construction technologies, which in Italy as well as in much of the West are not as well known as in the East.
