Management of WEEE in Italy

The correct waste management of electrical and electronic equipment, in Italy, allowed to recover 46,468 tons of iron, 1,722 tons of aluminum, 1,328 tons of copper and 5,892 tons of plastic, avoiding the emission into the atmosphere of over 1,200,000 tons of CO2. This undertaking was made possible thanks to the correct management of WEEE waste operated by the Italian Consortium for Recovery and the Recycling of Home Appliances which during the whole of 2012 collected about 71,800 tons of WEEE waste between refrigerators, air conditioners, water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, ovens and hoods.

THE metals recovered from the management of WEEE waste (iron, aluminum, copper and plastic) allowed a energy saving of approximately 134,000,000 kWh of electricity, compared to what is necessary to obtain the same quantities of raw materials virgins.

At the top of the ranking of the most virtuous regions based on WEEE managed by the Italian Consortium for Recovery and Recycling of household appliances, Lombardy is at the top of the rankings in 2012 but also in 2011. Lombardy is immediately followed by Veneto and Sicily. At the bottom of the ranking we find Molise, not bad for Campania which remains in the top ten, winning an eighth place.

If in the ranking, a region occupies a low position, it does not mean that it disposes badly WEEE waste, it might not even produce them at all: the sales volumes of new electrical equipment have dropped due to the protracted economic crisis, moreover the ranking does not take into account the density of the population and their habits but simply the quantity of WEEE waste collected which for Lombardy amounts to 12,250 tons and for Veneto to 7,323 tons.

Another consideration to make concerns the Consortia, groups and companies that manage the WEEE waste. Regarding the collection and management of WEEE, there are entities other than the Collective Systems established by the Manufacturers of Electrical and Electronic Equipment, it is the case of those companies that collect electronic waste to accumulate "the precious raw materials " contained in them. Those collected by Ecodom (Italian Consortium for the Recovery and Recycling of Appliances), represent only 30 per cent of all WEEE managed in Italy. THE WEEE waste managed in Italy in 2012 amounted to a total of approx 167,533 tons.

Remedia TSR, for example, is the company of the Remedia Group, specialized in managing all the operations necessary for correct disposal: transport, treatment, recovery and environmentally compatible disposal of Professional Waste WEEE.
