For save on heating in winter and with air conditioning in summer, it is important to have a perfectly insulated house. The enemies of energy saving are the drafts of doors and windows that allow cold air to enter the house making the efforts of the heating systems inefficient. Similarly, in the summer, the drafts of doors and windows allow the entry of hot air which further strains the air conditioners.

An effective way to eliminate drafts from doors and windows consists in the use of insulating hatch: the sealants on the market can be bought with a few euros and can save us on heating in winter and our air conditioning in summer.

If you have decided to eliminate the drafts of windows and doors and to improve the energy efficiency of your home, you need accessible materials and a good workforce. To do these chores it won't hurt to keep a pinch of enthusiasm and a baggage of patience. The first thing to do to save on heating is to hunt for drafts that we have at home. This job is relatively easy, you have to use yours5 senses, in particular, the touch with the faculty you have to identify a jet of cold air and discriminate it from one of hot air.

Where do drafts hide in the house?

Entrance doors

Check all the access doors, including that of the attic and the balcony. To eliminate the drafts of the doors you can use adhesive foam profiles or ad hoc sponges. These are very economical solutions that are dealt with at a cost of between € 5 and € 20 per door. These profiles eliminate thedrafts of the doors, i.e. those air currents that make the heating or cooling system ineffective.

Electrical outlets

Place a hand with the back facing the electrical sockets of the house, do you feel a current of air? The draft, usually, it comes from the holes in the edge of the electrical outlet. In this case you should unplug the electrical panel, disassemble the socket and intervene by adding simple insulating tape along the edges of the electrical socket. On the market there are also foam gaskets specially designed for the insulation of electrical sockets. The cost required for this intervention varies from 10 euro cents up to 5 euro for each electrical outlet to be insulated.

Hydraulic inputs

Just like the electricity network, the water one also comes from outside and ... if not well insulated, it brings with it annoyingdrafts. Check the places of entry of the plumbing pipes. Once thedrafts, you can eliminate them with sealants with foam or putty. Builders often neglect this step and along with drafts, even small insects can enter the house through these passages.

The windows, if not properly insulated, represent the main entry point of air currents. The drafts come in from the badly insulated or incorrectly adjusted profile. The windows have oneadjustment zipper, make sure that each window is properly registered and adheres perfectly to the corresponding profile of the wall. If that's not enough, for eliminate the drafts of the windows, you can use the same adhesive profiles seen for the doors.

The fireplace, in winter, is a fabulous design element, it creates an intimate, traditional environment, at the same time it warms and is excellent company. The only drawback is that in Italy we don't have the habit of "closing" the chimney once it is off. The chimney of the fireplace, in addition to allowing the entry of drafts, also allows insects, bad smells and ... noises to enter. A good solution is given by a kind of inflatable balloon that isolates the chimney. In this case, the cost rises to around 35 euros.
