The privet hedge in the garden

A privet hedge in the garden it lends itself to many situations. It can be used as a border but also to divide two areas of the green space, to border a walkway, to provide shade or to create a labyrinth. It's a evergreen shrub of noble traditions, widely used in Italian topiary art, and has the advantage of being satisfied with little soil.

For this reason one privet hedge it can also be grown in pots, even if it will be smaller and less resistant to cold than one grown in the open field. As for maintenance, well yes, privet requires care and attention but no more than other shrubs and cultivation is not difficult.

Start a privet hedge

To start a privet hedge you need to get the seedlings, which being a common shrub are easy to find on the market. A variety suitable for creating thick hedges is the lugustrum vulgare, but know that there are other very different varieties. Some of these can also be grown as saplings and there are some that lose their leaves in winter (deciduous). If you buy seedlings in a nursery, ask for precise information.

If you already have one privet hedge you might think about multiplying it by cutting, which is possible even if it requires time and a little experience. The ideal time to collect the cuttings of evergreen shrubs to be used as a hedge is the month of August. With a sharp knife, take the branches to be used for cuttings with a small portion of the main branch (heel). Remove the lower leaves and halve the limbus of the intermediate ones with scissors, leaving only those of the apex whole.

Then plant the cuttings in boxes 15 cm from each other, making sure that the earth is rather loose and always keep the soil moist. You can help yourself with a rooting hormone for this wood that will favor the development of the new root system. The following spring you will be able to take the root crops and cultivate them in a container for another year, or plant them immediately (they will be more fragile) by pruning them regularly.

The best time to start a new one privet hedge with seedlings already developed (3-4 years) it is the month of September. To prepare the seeding holes, move the soil with a fork about 40 centimeters deep and spread some compost soil or well-ripened manure on the bottom. To keep the alignment, you can stretch a wire between two or more poles placed along the planting line.

Once the new plants have been placed privet hedge (even in a double row if you want a thick hedge) close the hole with the earth, forming a slight hollow near the stem; it will be used to convey rainwater or watering towards the roots. At the end, abundant irrigation is necessary, to be continued by decreasing the doses (also depending on the rains) until the arrival of winter frost. At the base of the new plants it is important to provide a good mulching, with organic material such as dry leaves or with a breathable cloth.

Prune a privet hedge

Proper pruning is the most important thing for a beautiful one privet hedge. Both to give it shape and to keep it healthy. The privet can grow robust and dense up to 2-4 meters in height but tends to 'spin', keeping the leaves at the top and stripping at the base. Pruning is necessary to keep the foliage homogeneous.

At the end of winter, a cleaning operation is needed to remove any dry twigs from the foliage. On the other hand, the shape prunings can be one or two during the year. If the first is done in early spring, a second will be needed in September. If, on the other hand, the first cut is postponed, the pruning can be even only one. The result will not be the same, but this depends on the tastes and resources available. For the pruning of the ligusto hedge you can use the classic shears or the hedge trimmer. In the second case, electric ones are also suitable.
