It is not just wasted food, throwing away food wastes different types of resources, on the one hand organic matter and on the other all that is behind it (your money in the first place, the fuel of transport, energy and the resources used during the production chain).
Food waste is not only a problem of food but also of impacts on biodiversity and the climate: the estimate shows thatfood waste they cause CO2 emissions of 3.3 billion tons, an overall figure that challenges the world's largest CO2 emitters. Tips for storing fruit and vegetables
Should plastic bags be removed from purchased vegetables?
Absorbent kitchen paper is a good ally to extend the life of vegetables and small fruits. When you are at the fruit counter try to prefer fruit and vegetables without any packaging. When the fruit or vegetables purchased will be delivered to you in a plastic bag, once at home, do not remove it completely but drill holes on it. Put the bag (perforated) with the vegetables in the lowest shelf of the refrigerator only after putting a few sheets of absorbent kitchen paper underneath. This little trick will help you extend the life (and freshness) of many vegetables such as carrots, lettuce, rocket, spinach ...
Should vegetables be kept in the fridge? What about fruit?
Our refrigerators end up accommodating any food, even those that do not require low temperatures: eggs, for example, better not to keep them in the fridge!
A lot of fruit releases ethylene, a gaseous substance that accelerates the ripening process of the fruit itself but also of the fruit next to it. This fruit should be kept out of the fridge (maybe you can put it in the fridge only when it is already very ripe) also because the ethylene released could affect the odors in the fridge. Among the fruits and vegetables that should not be kept in the refrigerator I remind you:
How to increase the shelf life of vegetables
Many vegetables can be stored longer with simple tricks: broccoli, celery, green peppers and other vegetables can be wrapped in foil. Mushrooms should never be stored in plastic bags, but in paper. Not only fruit and vegetables can last longer: you know the polystyrene trays that the butcher gives you when you buy cheeses? Throw them away and remove the film ... Cheeses last longer if wrapped in wax paper.
To increase the shelf life of fruit and vegetables, remember to clean the refrigerator often. Wash the last two drawers of the fridge at least once a week (those intended for fruit and vegetables) in order to reduce the amount of bacteria that contribute to the deterioration of food.
